How to Keep Your Horse Happy and Hydrated During Winter

Winter has arrived again, which means our daily care for our animals should be considered to keep them healthy, happy and beautiful. Did you know that horses drink roughly drink 10 gallons of water each day? As temperatures drop, a horse’s water consumption also drops, so it’s important to ensure they meet their hydration needs throughout the cooler months.
Due to the temperature change, horses tend to consume less water during the winter weather since they are not drawn to drink while hot or sweating. It is key to keep an eye on your horse for signs of dehydration, such as:
To prevent lack of water consumption and emergency situations due to dehydration, five simple ways to encourage your horse to drink more in the winter months are:
1. Provide access to a salt block, mineral block or add 1-2 ounces of salt to their feed.
2. Offer free choice fresh, clean water at all times.
3. Make sure buckets are scrubbed and always clean, free of any residue buildup.
4. Soak your horse’s feed.
5. Give the option of warm water and break free any ice that has frozen over the water buckets.
As a horse owner, it is helpful to know what your horse’s normal vital signs are that way you will be able to quickly notice any changes that may require your vet’s attention.
In an undesirable situation where you suspect your horse is not consuming enough water, think that they are dehydrated or believe they could be suffering from an impaction, contact your veterinarian immediately.
